Joel’s Journal – May 12, 2016
I’ve recently started to think about my vacation plans for this summer. Well, I guess that’s not completely accurate, I’m probably thinking about travelling or my next trip a couple times a week, but usually these are just daydreams. Now I actually have some time off to do something.
Having been with The Express for nearly two years now means I have a full two weeks of down time. It may not seem like a lot, but when you’ve moved jobs as much as I have over the last few years, two weeks of vacation is almost a dream come true.
I know one thing is for sure, I want to spend some time in Algonquin Park.
Anyone who reads this blog regularly will know all about my ongoing love affair with the place.
Last summer I decided to take my week and fly out west to visit friends in Calgary and Vancouver. And while that was mostly funded by a cache of Aeroplan points (and helped cross the Calgary Stampede off my bucket list) I don’t think flying anywhere this summer is a realistic option for my wallet. I can feel him cringing in my inside pocket just thinking about it.
In a perfect world, I would have the time off to fly overseas. However two weeks is just not enough time to really explore any place in Europe and surely isn’t enough to justify the egregious cost of a flight.
So, for the first time since coming back from Athabasca in 2014, I will be spending an entire summer in Ontario.
Along with Algonquin and a cottage trip with family I’ve already got slotted, I’m still looking for some ideas.
All I know is that where I decide to go, whether it be a day trip or perhaps a couple overnight adventures, I want it to be scenic, I want to be able to take lots of photos, and I want it to be worth writing about.
