Do you remember overhead projectors?
I feel like I haven’t seen one of those things since high school, but when I was thinking about the best metaphor to explain how bleeping crazy things are for me this week, those plastic sheets and those felt tip markers the teachers used on them were the first things that came to mind.
Well, imagine for a second that you’re sitting in a dark room. On the wall in front of you is a large white square of light emanating form the projector beside you.
With a plastic crinkle, I’ll place the first sheet down on the projector. At the top, in the left hand corner of the page, now in the left hand corner of your white square of light, it reads WEEK 1.
Here we have a series of lines arching across the page, a list of to-dos running down the side along with a couple random notes jotted along the top.
These are my stories for this week, there’s a bunch of news stories arising from city council’s committee meetings, there’s a number of community stories, missing persons case, and we have our sports stories, those are the wide arching red lines near the bottom. (Picture it!)
Now, with another plastic crinkling flourish, I’ll place the second clear plastic sheet atop the first one. This sheet has WEEK 2 written at the top centre of the page. Once again we have a few coloured lines shooting across the page, a list of potential stories at the bottom along with a point-form list of tasks to be accomplished running up the right-hand side of the page.
Finally, a sheet with WEEK 3 in the right-hand corner falls on top of all the others, and this one is covered in circled words and lines jutting out from them connected to other circled words and a few lists along the top and bottom. All of these are potential stories and ideas for the week that I’m gone on my road trip and that will need to be completed in the next seven days.
Okay, swipe all that out of your thought process. It’s just a metaphor, but it gives you an idea of how I’m pretty much thinking about three weeks all in one, and it’s been absolute madness. Along with coming up with new ideas for content on this blog, planning the upcoming road trip and managing the other aspects of daily life, I don’t think I’ve got to bed before 1 a.m. all week. I’m generally a morning person, not a night owl.
The reason I mention all of this is because during weeks like this it can be easy to get overwhelmed as everything piles up. And while organization, preparation and just f$%$#ing doing the work helps, I always keep one thing in mind.
This is the kind of productivity that makes things happen in life.
There’s this quote, I can’t remember who said it (excuse me while I Google it).
That’s it, the Farrelly Brothers (directors of Dumb and Dumber, There’s Something About Mary etc), one of whom compared life standing on a moving sidewalk (but it’s running in the opposite direction). Stand still, and you move backwards, walk and you stay in the same place, but if you hustle, you get ahead.
Here’s a great short film by Casey Neistat (30 seconds) that will give you the visual.
So, that thought always keeps me company during these crazy times, just knowing that all of this work is getting me somewhere.
Well, that’s it for me today, it’s Friday afternoon and my work day is just about to start (starting late because of the General game tonight) so, all of you, I’ll see you tomorrow and continue to do what you love and do it well.
Thanks for reading!
